Insulation and Air Sealing
Making sure your attic is properly insulated keeps your energy costs regular and your home comfortable. If you are experiencing uncomfortable temperatures, high utility bills, inconsistent temperatures throughout your home, or you can just see insulation in poor condition, it’s likely time for an inspection.
At Couto Construction, we offer insulation and air sealing services to keep the temperature in your home consistent. Contact us today if you have any questions or concerns regarding your home’s insulation.
Ductwork can lose efficiency due to leaks from gaps and holes. The air loss puts more strain on your heating and cooling systems to keep a consistent temperature in your home. Sealing these gaps and holes with spray foam or duct mastic will allow for the best airflow in your ductwork. For the best energy efficiency, it’s best to combine this with duct insulation.
Having gaps and cracks form between your living space and attic is almost inevitable and will hurt your home’s efficiency. To remedy this, testing is done to find the problem areas and then they are sealed with spray foam. The gaps and cracks can form in and around the plumbing or wiring going through the attic floor, ductwork, vents, chimney cases, attic doors, or recessed lights and ceiling fans.
Ice Dam Prevention
Ice dams form because of poor insulation. They can cause damage to your shingles or gutters and can lead to roof leaks. Ice dams are formed from heat loss causing the snow to melt on your roof. The water then runs towards the cold eaves and gutters and refreezes. This process repeats itself and creates the ice dam. Water will eventually pool up behind the dam and cause leaks into your attic, wreaking serious damage. Air sealing and better insulation keep your home protected from ice dams.
Attic Mold Prevention
Attics are an at-risk area for humidity, and because of this, mold. Mold can cause many problems, including health issues for the people living in the home and structural damage. Our two-part system can remove dark stains and discoloration from mold growth and prevent it from growing in the future. Air sealing and having insulation installed also help to discourage mold from growing in your attic.
The Insulations We Work With:
Cellulose insulation is treated with a non-toxic borate solution making it pest and mold resistant. It’s an effective and durable material that can raise your attics R-value (how well insulation can resist heat). It won’t run the risk of compressing and it has a Class-1 fire safety rating. Cellulose is blown-in insulation made from recycled newspaper, so it’s environmentally friendly. Air sealing should be done prior to installing the insulation.
Rigid Foam Insulation
Rigid foam insulation fills in where cellulose isn’t ideal. It’s a durable and water-resistant material which comes in panels that can be cut to the size needed. It helps improve your home’s energy efficiency. When being installed, air sealing upgrades are typically used with it for more effective results.
Radiant Barrier Insulation
During the summer, the attic is the warmest part of your house. Any ductwork in your attic can heat up, causing your AC unit to work harder to cool your home. Radiant barriers reflect heat and are a great solution to this problem. They are installed within your attic, and when properly installed they can reflect up to 97% of the sun’s rays.
When ductwork in your attic is left uninsulated, your heating and cooling systems are more susceptible to the temperature shifts. This causes your systems to be inefficient and also prone to leaks. During the summer, the cold air from your AC unit is going through hot ductwork and heating up. In the winter, the warm air from your heater is going through cold ductwork and cooling down. Having spray foam duct insulation installed solves these problems and helps to keep your home more efficient.
